W13. Good Copy Bad Copy

I was impressed with remix music in Nigeria. They download music they want to use in remix. It can be piracy but there is not copyright law. Watching the video, I thought they just enjoy music without considering personal interest. But it is difficult for me to decide a certain position about copyright law and free culture.
Free culture has the good purpose that all people have a right to enjoy creativity and contents. As the video showed, copyright can inhibit creativity and it has protected for particular interests. However, I think paying for contents made from others is also important. This can make contents more valuable and I show respect to people who create them by paying for them. So I am not sure the assertion that free is right, and I don't think that copyright law becomes useless. I think the range of copyright law and the concept of culture will be more expanded.
Current phenomena about enjoying contents freely are seen as natural trends because all kinds of contents can be consumed based on digital technology. All people who recreate contents with their own creativity must be stopped according to current copyright law, but this will not be stopped. So I think copyright law should think back about how it has influenced creativity and culture, and it should seek for compromise plans with free culture. Copyright law needs to be changed following recent culture trends.

Good copy bad copy

There are few sentences spoken in this video that I still remember and makes me think again.
"Who owns what?"
"What is the real purpose of property?"

It was so natural to think that things need to be owned and people need to pay when they use other's work. However, technology is getting developed, and the world is getting globalized. It's somehow impossible to clarify everything whether it someone's own work or not, and even if we can do so, I don't see any point there. Someone in the video said that 'freedom brings more vibrant economy' and I agree with that. This made me think of Wikipedia. If people don't have freedom and fun from it on Wikipedia, they are not gonna spend that much time there, or Wikipedia wouldn't be as this big.
The main thing is the way of earning money is getting changed. Singers used to sell their CDs to make profit, but now it's not a good way anymore. I think when we share things, we all can develop together.

W12. My weekly edits

I edited my wiki project's articles. It was not easy for me because I have a poor English..
So my partner, Dalbit had a hard time to edit it. I'm sorry for that... But I think I did my best. The best difficult thing is that there are few reference about our project. So we had a hard time to find that. I don't know how to deal with this.

And I made a big table in 'How I Met Your Mother' TV series' article.
I copied and pasted the HTML, and found the information at official site. It was hard, but I made it.

News article. Suspicion of fabrication in Wikipedia by Government of the United Kingdom

I want to share this article with the classmates because this can remind us of how we need to use Wikipedia. This article is from  Korean  Herald, 2014-05-01.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

BBC said that there were some edits in Wikipedia done with Government of United Kingdom intranet IP. The edits was more than 100 times. The thing is the information edited includes words of racial discrimination. Also context about immoral behavior of Cherie Blair in 2005 was deleted.

How to find reference list?

When i make reference some topic.

When i click credit reference, i see just '{{reflist|2}}'

how to make more reference this situation?

W11. After watching 'Laws that choke creativity' by Lawrence Lessig

I could not understand all, but I think that in this video he said laws hinder enjoyment of contents. Laws have traditions and want to keep them. But the manners of enjoyment of culture have changed, and this can differ with laws. As said in this video, culture compatible with laws is a communication from the top down. Laws allow people to just accept the contents from media. In the past, technologies making contents were specialized, but now most technologies are democratized. So anyone can create contents when they want and what they want although they are not experts. I think recreating original contents with new creativity is amazing thing regardless of copyright issue. I also agree with his mention about amateur culture. It does not mean immature but it means free and pure enjoyment. I am impressed with the saying “for the love, not for the money”.

And other English Wikipedia edits was very small part of articles, same as usual.

In Korean Wikipedia, I added MJ's new album information.
I' m so proud I did that. :)

And I participated in talk page, 'Mnet 아시안 뮤직 어워드' article.
It was my first time to reply in Wikipedia. So I was a little nervous.
These are my Korean Wikipedia's contribution.

B. Reinventing the encyclopedia game

After watching TED Talk "Reinventing the encyclopedia game" by Rives.
TED Talk

Encyclopedia game sounds fun but mysterious at the beginning. I started to watch this out of curiosity. This talk was obviously fun and encouraging. Rives showed how we can play Wikipedia. I learned that Wikipedia is a place where we can not only put the information and edit, but also explore and feel adventurous. I think the more and more people contribute to Wikipedia, which means the bigger collective intelligence we have there, the more this game will be fun. I tried to do this game starting from my hometown, I was able to know more about its history, but then I ended up specific area of different city where I hadn't known before. I used to think that game should have a winner or competition system, but I have to re-define 'game' which is just fun to do.

What would make writing on Wikipedia easier for me?

I think we can write wikipedia easy. Because we can see other topic. and we can copy the "form". so we can write wiki as we wish.

W10. What would make writing on Wikipedia easier for me?

I think I can use Wikipedia better than before through some trials and errors. I learned some norms on Wikipedia, and now I edit articles concerning the norms and their forms. Honestly, they bothered me and I thought that they were troublesome. But I think they are enough helpful when I edit articles on Wikipedia. The norms and forms on Wikipedia help me to make writing easier, and learning new norms and grammars on Wikipedia is exciting and useful.

Another thing that makes writing easier for me is that Wikipedia has a lot of wikipedians. It is a little embarrassing to be pointed out shortage of my edits, but it makes my edits more developmental and I think this fact can make me write articles of better quality.

W10. What would make writing on Wikipedia easier for me?

I don't think I can handle the Wikipedia perfectly. Not that long ago, I had hard job to put 'the talk box' on my user page. The conclusion was very easy. But I spent much time because I'm not good at English... I think my poor English skill is the biggest obstacle to do Wikipedia to me. But I think the biggest advantage is that Wikipedia provides many languages. So if I have a trouble in English Wikipedia, I can find almost same articles in Korean Wikipedia. It will be the same help inversely.
And I want to talk about 'Wiki Beta Program'. It is helpful definitely, because HTML system is not so easy for me. But sometimes HTML is more convenient than Beta system. I think Wiki Beta system will be better as just a summative level.
And I always use the Wikipedia commons. I love this system because I have many pictures that I want to share with Wikipedia. The best advantage of the Wikipedia commons is that 'JUST ONE UPLOAD, I CAN USE THE PICTURE EVERY COUNTRIES' WIKIPEDIA'. It makes my edit on Wikipedia much easier for me. :)

W9. My weekly edits

w7 and w8 English edits total: 10 articles

w7 and w8 Korean edits total: 10 articles

I almost edit very minor thing. So there are nothing special...
I like taking pictures. So I edit the articles through the Wikipedia Commons.
and This is my last Wikipedia commons' contributions.

All of my pictures are made by myself. So it doesn't bother with copyright.
And I can handle the descriptions that can be diverse languages.

So I will change my picture's description like this. :)

What would make writing on Wikipedia easier for me?

The system of Wiki is different from others. I am spending much time than other page like blog, facebook because Wiki is more difficult to use compared to other program. Although they provide new-version beta program, because of its imperfection, it's incommode to edit articles. Except systemic problem, to improve quality of Wiki, I try to find many references and images. Frankly, I am not good at editing articles so that I need time to search information, modify article and confirm it again. Building better quality of article needs time. Now, I can supply reference and modify imperfect contents.

W9. My last edit about a picture on Wikipedia

As I showed my edits in last class, I wanted to add a picture of Korean actor on English Wikipedia. I found the picture on Korean Wikipedia, but I didn’t realize that the picture is only on Korean Wikipedia not on Wikimedia Commons. It didn’t work on English Wikipedia and I didn’t why. After last class, I notified the uploader of the picture on his talk page and uploaded the picture on Wikimedia Commons. But it took a warning massage for deletion because of uncertain copyright license. I thought that it is okay with the Korean Wikipedia article’s link, however it was not enough. So I asked for help to Galadrian to solve this problem. He suggested that this picture should be deleted even that on Korean Wikipedia. I think some pictures of the uploader can be deleted since his pictures’ copyright did not be confirmed.

It is great to add many pictures on Wikipedia, but it is more important to pay attention to copyright. Copyright license allows other people to use and share pictures, and I think this should be the purpose of uploading pictures on Wikipedia.
