What surprising me the most.

I think I was surprised at the beginning when somebody corrected my typo not long after my edit. I had felt nobody would care what I do on Wikipedia, which might be the reason sometimes people misbehave, but when I got the feedback quite instantly, I felt that Wikipedia is alive and I gotta be careful putting the right information.
Also, the surprising thing is that there is nothing we can't do as long as we try. I remember that I was wondering why I couldn't put the picture of a company into the infobox. Peter said that was weird too and he helped me to ask people around how to do so or if we could do that. Wikpedians helped us to create a new line in the infobox which we can add a picture, and I felt so proud of doing it. As I was told during the class, we can't know everything, but we can surely try to do what we want to do, and there are always people out there trying to help me out to make Wikipedia better and more trustworthy. That's what I was surprised the most about Wikipedia.

W4. My weekly edits

Thanks to Wikipedia Adventure, I could learn a lot of skills about Wikipedia. But I still have problems about Wikipedia. I should study more and more about Wikipedia. Here are the things that I learned last week.
First, I could use Wikipedia Commons. It was really fun and exciting. I love taking picture using my camera. So I will much use Wikipedia commons in the future. I edited 5 articles(3 in English, 2 in Korean) and used 5 my picture through Wikipedia Commons. And Someone gave me some thanks message!! :-) It was my best time in Wikipedia.
Second, I wanted to fix my old article. It was translate article when I took 'Globalization' last semester. But I think I still don't know how to fix it perfectly. Because I'm still not good at editing articles...

How can I made like this?

and..
this??

and what do they mean and how can I edit reference like this?

I will appreciate someone teach these things. :)

And Here are my last week's edits.

W4. About my edits last week

I made some mistakes relating to references and copyrights while editing last week as I presented in class. I tried to paraphrase the edits about Korean food on English wikipedia, but I am not sure that it is okay. And similar thing happened on Korean wikipedia. When I added a book reference for my edit, someone asked me to check if I COPIED and PASTED contents in the reference. I was a little embarrased, but it was an opportunity to understand trustworthy information and references. Also, it was helpful to know how to use Wikipedia and how Wikipedia works. I could learn about when we can use and trust information on Wikipedia or any other websites. I think it was a good experience.

B5. Can we trust Wikipedia?

I want to ask first 'can I trust Wikipedia?'. My answer would be 'pretty much yes'.I remember that I said 'the more I use Wikipedia, the more I trust this encyclopedia because I could feel that it is alive with many people working on this' during last semester. I have an opinion now which is similar as last year but kind of different. I somehow think it is upon one's ability to be able to trust Wikipedia or not. If one knows how to use/navigate Wikipedia properly, Wikipedia would be really trustworthy, but if the one doesn't know how to do so, it is much more likely to have distorted information. So, I would like to encourage many people who only use Wikipedia for getting information to actually try to edit and know more about how it works so that they can distinguish good and bad information. Someone said not to use Wikipedia as the end of information, but to use this as the start of searching. I agree with that. We can definitely start searching with Wikipedia, but we shouldn't end the process in this, we need to check sources and different engines to make sure that the information in there can be trusted.

Why use Wikipedia?

When I was young, there was a pack of encyclopedia in my room. The book was interesting and it was like a father to me because it taught me a lot. The time has passed and the 'internet' was presented. The communication between a person to a a person was only valid in the real world, off-line, however, the new on-line world dramatically changed the way of communication. Many people share memories of not only encyclopeia but also books from their young ages. As the internet develops every second, people's information and the new communication met and mixed. Nowadays through Wikipedia, people share their own encyclopedias online. For example, some might be a profession to music, and some might be a scientist and these two can share their expert information - which should be only TRUE - through Wikipedia. Human being is a social animal and it lives by communication. Wikipedia helps human being to communicate professional things.

first time in class

Today. very interesting study.
because i  announce first. it's so shake my heart. but it's good.
when this week, i want upload the picture about my edits.
but i't so difficult for me!.(copyright,etc...)
i think in wikipedia, copyright is so important. so uploading pictures is difficult. is this your? not your? yep.
finally i know how to upload images and use it. because i used ko.wiki. :)
i know how to upload images, so i will make many edits.
but i don't know about }}{{I,[],*...etc it's extremely difficult.
i think ctrl+c, ctrl+v is very good skill in computer. haha

W3. Why do you think people use Wikipedia? Why do others write for it?

I think Wikipedia is the one of the most handy encyclopedia. If you can access the internet, and your country can access to Wikipedia, you can use Wikipedia anytime and anyplace. There are about 200 languages in Wikipedia. So everyone in Earth can use this useful encyclopedia. The motto of Wikipedia also can be explained about this. 'The free encyclopedia that any one can edit' is a very fascinating.
Wikipedia never makes it if just one person edit it. I think we edit Wikipedia for the completion of modern knowledge. We are performing ours duty like this now.  Someone just enjoys editing Wikipedia. But all of us who use Wikipedia will make our knowledge system ultimately.

W3. Why do you think people use Wikipedia? Why do others write for it?

I think the reason why people use Wikipedia is related to how Wiki works. All men have a desire to know deeper knowledge. On Wikipedia, people can develop their knowledge by editing articles or by discussing with others. As we know, Wikipedia is operated by many people's collaboration. we can improve our knowledge and also provide more information on wiki for free. And also This process of exchanging opinions is regarded as contributions of human being's knowledge and making better world. These aspects of Wikipedia become more attractive the more we use it. And compared to other websites' searching, the information on Wikipedia is easier to find sources and references, so it can be trustworthy. These are the reasons why people use Wikipedia and write for it, I think.

W4 Interesting article about Wikipedia

주영재 기자 jyj@kyunghyang.com

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I found an interesting article from France about Wikipedia which might be good to discuss with the classmates since trust issue of Wikipedia is one of our coming lectures.

Basically this article is saying that Wikipedia is getting old, and it is not getting better. This article pointed out that the number of contributors have been decreased since 2007, and it came to 31000 from 51000. It says the period of being an active Wikipedian is getting shorter and that could mean articles's context can be doubt-able.
One of many reasons of Wikipedia being old is trustworthiness, because anyone can edit and they can write for their stands with a few examples. Also there is no way we can clarify of cited information. Another reason is that people are seeking individualism.

W2. My first edits. Describe why you made them.

I don't remember exactly, but my first edit is history about Korea. When i studied history and i want to get some information, so i find in Wikipedia. but Wikipedia information is different form my memory. so i fixed the subject.

I search "College Scholastic Ability Test". In the part of "how to run", some sentences could be an argument in my opinion. "If students are late in test, police or firefighter can bring them to place where test are done." So I deleted this part.
The article of New york city subway is well translated but, one sentence was awkward. I changed the sentence more natural.
Hanyang university Ansan campus has 7 strategic departments. But in Wiki, there are only 4 departments. so I upgraded information refer to website of our school.

W1. What do I know about Wikipedia and what do I want to learn about it?

I just heard that Wiki is the one of online encyclopedia that people can share their mind. So I wondered whether I can believe information written by non experts. But whenever I search key words in Google, I can find the information from Wikipedia easily. And also, it's really specific and detailed information. In addition, when I search the data in NAVER or kinds of Korean web portal link, It is connected with Wikipedia as a Knowledge encyclopedia.
I want to use Wikipedia by searching the international encyclopedia and adding information about Korea. I think that Wiki can be a great opportunity to inform Korea to global citizen.

W2. My first edits. Describe why you made them.

My first edits was in 2010. I took professor Yoon's class at that time. So I edited Wikipedia as a practical exercise for the first time . I was very interested in Korean pop singer. so I edited SHINEE and Supreme Team's articles. Especially, Supreme Team, the Korean famous hiphop duo released their first regular record in 2010. So I edited about their first regular record. I thought that editing Wikipedia is help for unfamiliar things. We can edit Something that is not famous for many people, but I have detailed knowledge about that. And we can get some pride about that. I got some pride at that time. Or I can edit missing things. When I edited SHINEE's article, there are almost all about SHINEE. But I found something that is missing their history. So I edited missing o.s.t album's information.

W1. What do I know you about Wikipedia and What do I want to learn about it?

When I was a freshman, I met Wikipedia in the professor Yoon's class. I learned that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and it is made by collective intelligence at that time. However, class of Wikipedia was very small part of his class. So I just know that about Wikipedia. And last year, I took your class, Globalization. I edited 'proto-globalization', but I still don't know what exactly Wikipedia and collective intelligence is.
I want to know why Wikipedia is famous for all over the world and Why do we need Wikipedia and so on. I will do my best this semester to know more about Wikipedia.

W2. My first edits. Describe why you made them.

My first edit on Wikipedia was about French. I am interested in French. I studied it when I was in high school, but I couldn’t do more because I had to prepare for college. So I learned French after I entered university by self-study. I had to search the information about French like words and grammar. I searched ordinal numbers in French, but there was not enough articles on Korean Wikipedia. Thus, I added some information about French ordinal numbers. It was exciting and satisfying to add information of the area that I feel interest.

W1. What do I know about Wikipedia and what do I want to learn about it?

I just heard about Wikipedia that has lots of academic information, and I know the information on Wikipedia is made by many people. It is interesting and attractive to make useful information by volunteering. Also, the knowledge on Wikipedia is helpful for studying. It has neutral point of view on any issues, so I think I can improve ability to have deep views of things. I want to learn how to use Wikipedia and how to find information that is trustworthy. I realized that finding and collecting data is promising skill for information society. And I hope to have an opportunity for understanding information sociology by learning collective intelligence through this class.

W3. The most impressive Wikipedia story.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------This article is about a guy, called Tom Rich, who runs 'almostadoctor.com.' He gathered as much information as possible about his major, medical science, and share it with people for free. He became a founder of the medical website which has the highest authority, and he was awarded as '2013 innovator' by Health Service Journal.

W2. My first article. Describe what you learned from it.

Since I took this class last time and wrote about my first edit already, I am going to write this time about my first article that I made.
I believe that my first article is about 황경신. I made that article because I thought she was worthy being in Wikipedia as a writer. After I made my first article, I proudly showed that to my professor because I felt great that I can not only edit, but also create a new article. I still remember my professor's comment which was really solid. He was that the article needs to show that why this person is worthy being in Wikipedia, and it is people, in other words, collective intelligence, to decide that. So I put some references and made infobox to make the article look good and has notability. It is amazing that Wikipedia never stops and keeps moving to make the information it has correct every single minute.

W1. What do I know about Wikipedia and wha do I want to learn about it?

I hadn't known about Wikipedia well until I took the last class. Since we learned about Wikipedia, I think I am quite familiar with how Wikipedia works and how to use it. I know the basic principle of prople to use/edit Wikipedia is that they find this fun. No one do this expecting any rewards, I guess, almost no one. Wikipedia is trying to keep the neutral point of view in any matters, and it's open to people arguing and exchanging their opinions. I believe that it exactly shows that how collective intelligence runs.
Knowing some about Wikipedia got me some benefits during my winter internship. When I was told to search some information, I know how to search and what to trust.
In this class, I want to learn about Wikipedia more in depth, and other collective intelligence if possible. Also, by simply taking this class, it is a good and steady motivation for me to edit Wikipedia and contribute to our sum of knowledge.

My first wikipedia edit

My first edit was with the class 'sociology of globalization'. The task was to translate any article which is related to globalization and I chose one of popular articles which was about k-pop. Actually I am into that business and doing it as a profession, thus the work was pretty interesting to me. I am sure that I am the first and only k-pop artist who participated in wikipedia about k-pop. I would like to develop my participation in wikipedia through this class and thrilling to use my experiences to this world-wide collective intelligence.
